Last December Kat slipped and fell from a balcony and broke the C5 and C6 vertebrae in her neck, resulting in a complete SCI. The injury has left her paralyzed from her shoulders down.
Initially she was given an ASIA score of A and was not expected to gain much use of any of her body below the shoulders, so she was released from her rehab center and sent home with home care. But after healing more and working with her Physical and Occupational Therapists for the past few months at home, she is beginning to make major gains in both arms and even the torso region.
She has deep tissue sensations in her arms and lower extremities which her doctors find very encouraging. Based on progress and her positive attitude, she has been recommended for admission into an inpatient care facility by both her home care nurses and therapists, and her spinal surgeon and the chief physician at Roger C Peace. But most rehabilitation centers in our area they only accept the transfer of patients from medical facilities.
We have just found out that she has been accepted into Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Greenville, which is a new rehabilitation center specializing in SCI and TBIs, and our insurance has agreed to pay for half of a 21 day stay, but we would be responsible for the remaining $900 per day, which comes to approximately $20,000. This is well out of our price range. We have not had the opportunity to set up any fund raising at this time, so we are looking for grants that will help with some of the expenses for this rehab center.
