Walking With Anthony & The Washington Redskins Alumni Celebrity Golf Tournament & Dinner Raised Over $150,000 for Walking with Anthony, a Non-Profit Organization Dedicated to the Rehabilitation of Spinal Cord Injuries Washington, DC – October 29, 2013
Walking With Anthony & The Washington Redskins Alumni Celebrity Golf Tournament & Dinner was a huge success, raising over $150,000 for Walking With Anthony, a non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries (SCI). The Golf Tournament and Dinner took place on Monday, October 21st at the prestigious Country Club of Fairfax, in Fairfax, Virginia.
Over 150 legendary sports celebrities and VIP guests took part in the fabulous day including Executive Director of Walking With Anthony, Anthony Purcell; Founder of Walking With Anthony, Micki Purcell; Washington Redskins greats Hall of Famer, Charley Taylor; Former NFL League MVP, Mark Moseley; Jimmie Jones; Brig Owens; Rich Milot; Ted Vactor; Mike Bragg and Ravin Caldwell.
The golf tournament was followed by an exclusive dinner reception emceed by Washington Redskins Sideline Reporter and Radio Personality for ESPN 980, Rick “Doc” Walker. The event honored the world renowned leader in complex spinal surgery, Dr. John K. Starr of Washington Orthopedics & Sports Medicine as well as spinal cord injury patients, Erica Predum, Chris Utz and April Cave, for their courage to become healthier, stronger and gain independence. “We are so very grateful to everyone who was involved with Walking With Anthony & The Washington Redskins Alumni Celebrity Golf Tournament & Dinner and for all of our guests who helped us raise over $150,000 that will be used to help more individuals with SCI recovery” said Micki Purcell, President and Founder of Walking With Anthony.
“The costs for rehabilitation are astronomical and the money raised at the event will allow us to help at least four more people with SCI, as well as maintain rehabilitation for those we have already sponsored.” Walking With Anthony relies heavily upon donations to fund its efforts and is continuously seeking new corporate partners to help cover the costs of rehabilitation. Highlights of the Dinner included a warm thank you speech from Executive Director of Walking With Anthony, Anthony Purcell; award ceremony and prizes for winners of the Golf Tournament; entertainment and bidding on magnificent silent and live auction items. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the Walking With Anthony & The Washington Redskins Alumni Charity Celebrity Golf Tournament & Dinner will benefit Walking With Anthony which raises funds to provide financial assistance for SCI victims, expand rehabilitation centers and supporting research relating to SCI rehabilitation.
Walking With Anthony was inspired by Anthony Purcell who was paralyzed after a diving accident in Miami Beach. Determined to beat the odds, Anthony quickly began intense rehabilitation which helped him get stronger, healthier, more independent, and come closer to his goal of being able to walk again. As a result of his experience, Anthony and his mother, Micki Purcell, created Walking With Anthony, a foundation to help give others with SCI the same chance at recovery. In addition to honoring Dr. Starr during the dinner reception, Walking With Anthony will also honor local spinal cord injury patients – for their courage to become healthier, stronger and gain independence.
